Welcome to edition three of The Boxi Brief.
Once a month: one marketing idea worth your time, a few quick observations, a short Boxi update. No fluff.
One Idea: AI finds you only if the customer already knows your name
One stat from last month, public and verifiable.
The share of consumers using AI tools to find a local professional jumped to 45%, up from 6% a year ago (BrightLocal 2026). That's one of the fastest behavior shifts ever recorded in how people search.
Most owners read that and think: I need to show up in ChatGPT. True. But there's a catch nobody's telling you about, and it's the whole game.
When someone asks an AI tool about a business by name, such as "is Webb Mechanical any good?", the AI finds it almost every time. Researchers tested this across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Branded questions got answered correctly about 97% of the time.
But the question that brings you a new customer isn't your name. It's "best HVAC company near me in Charlotte." Nobody types your name because they don't know it yet. That's the whole point of the search.
On those no-name discovery questions, visibility falls off a cliff. One report found 88% of businesses are missing or misrepresented in AI recommendations entirely.
So here's the trap: the AI knows you exist if a customer already does. A customer who's never heard of you is the one worth winning, and that's where you're invisible.
The fix isn't a buzzword. AI pulls its answer from the same places a careful human would: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your service pages, and what other sites say about you. Get those right and you're in the answer. Skip them and the exact customer who would've called will never see you.
Quick Hits
Google's AI Mode searches have doubled every quarter since launch (CNN, May 2026). The questions are getting longer, about 3× the length of a normal search. People aren't typing keywords anymore. They're asking full questions and expecting one answer back.
Review count alone stopped being the lever. AI now weighs recency and the actual words in your reviews, not just the total (Whitespark 2026). Forty old reviews lose to fifteen recent ones that mention what you actually do.
"Best of" mentions feed the answer. When another site lists you among the best in your trade, AI treats that as a vote. One off-page mention can do more than a month of on-site tweaking.
The Boxi Angle
Getting found in AI answers has a name now: Answer Engine Optimization. We build it into your plan with a structured profile, review velocity, answer-ready pages, and the citations AI reads. It is included in our Growth plan at $1,497/month. Hook Agency charges $4,000/month for AEO on its own.
Not sure where you stand? Run the free check. It tells you whether ChatGPT and Google AI can find you today and what's missing if they can't.
Or see exactly what AEO covers and what it costs: our AEO page. Pricing's on it, on purpose.
See you next month.
